Clymer downs MG, improves to 3-0

CLYMER — A 26-10 third quarter helped Clymer put away Maple Grove and improve to 3-0 in Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association Division 2 West on the young season with a 58-42 win.

“Tonight was a good win for us,” Clymer head coach Irv King said. “Maple Grove had a quality win over Sherman the other night. We were very pleased to get this one early.”

Hunter Wassink had 8 points, including a pair of 3-pointers, Micah Willink had 7 points and Bishop Kopta had 6 points as the trio combined for 21 of the Pirates’ points in the decisive period.

“We made a little adjustment at halftime and the kids did a great job with it,” King said. “It got us some great looks early in the third quarter. In the first two minutes, we got three or four 3-pointers and quick buckets to open the game up.”

Kopta finished with a team-high 18 points while Wassink added 16 for Clymer (3-0, 3-0). Wassink had five rebounds, five assists and three steals; Kopta had three assists and three steals; and Matthew White had a team-high eight rebounds.

Cam Crist led the Red Dragons (2-1, 2-1) with 12 points to go along with five rebounds and five assists. Adam Marsh added 11 points, Tucker Fenton had 10 points and Drew Kelemen had five rebounds.

SWANSON HAS TRIPLE-DOUBLE

SINCLAIRVILLE — Ethan Weingart and Darien Swanson combined for 37 points in the first half and Westfield hung on for a 75-70 Division 2 West victory over Cassadaga Valley.

Swanson scored 20 of his game-high 22 points and Weingart added all 17 of his points in the first 16 minutes as the Wolverines (1-2, 1-2) took a 43-36 halftime advantage.

In the second half, the Cougars (0-3, 0-2) held Swanson to just 2 points, but he finished with 12 assists and 11 rebounds for a triple-double.

“We switched up to a diamond-and-two to shut those guys down,” Cassadaga Valley head coach Cody Jacobson said. “Brayden Kneer (18 points) hurt us inside. Darien did a good job of controlling the game, found the open guy and they hit shots.”

Nick Russo led the Cougars with 15 points to go along with five rebounds, Braden LeBaron had 14 points and three assists, and Drake Pierce added 13 points and three steals.

CARDINALS ROLL

SILVER CREEK — Jaiden Huntington scored a game-high 22 points and pulled down six rebounds, and Drew Hind drilled six 3-pointers to pace Randolph to a 72-24 Division 2 East victory over Silver Creek.

Hind finished with 18 points and five assists; and Ashton Bushey added 14 points and six boards as the Cardinals improved to 3-0 overall and 2-0 in the division.

Randolph jumped out to a 22-2 lead after the first quarter, an advantage that grew to 37-7 by halftime.

The Black Knights (1-3, 0-2) were led by Matt Woleben with 12 points and eight rebounds. Teammate Sam Braidich chipped in 5 points, 10 rebounds and three steals.
