Maple Grove dominates Class D races at Knox Farm

EAST AURORA — Maple Grove’s runners were pushed harder than ever during the regular season.

On Friday, with trips to the New York State Public High School Athletic Association cross country championships on the line, the Red Dragons runners came up huge.

Maple Grove’s finished with 46 points while Frewsburg was just behind with 51 points in the boys race while the Red Dragons girls finished with 36, just five ahead of Clymer/Sherman/Panama’s 41 points in the girls race as both Maple Grove teams won Section VI titles at Knox Farm State Park.

Southwestern’s boys also claimed a Class C title with 49 points as Alden was second with 61 points, sending the Trojans to next Saturday’s state meet at Chenango Valley State Park.

Maple Grove’s Lukas Baer won the boys Class D individual title with a first-place time of 17:04.90. Red Dragons teammates Ben Cornell, third place; Sean Verbosky, eighth place; Jacob Lewis, 16th place; and Luke Tomlinson, 17th place, figured into the winning score. Also advancing to the state meet were: Randolph’s Roan Kelly, second place; Barker’s Mason Allee-Castro, fourth place; Franklinville/Ellicottville’s Maddox Bush, fifth place; Clymer/Sherman/Panama’s Michael Raven, sixth place; and Frewsburg’s Micah Barber, seventh place.

“A big congratulations goes out to Lukas Baer for being the individual Class D champion for the second year in a row,” Maple Grove coach Bella Zuroski said. “He’s such a hard-working kid and I was so happy for him to see it pay off with a sectional victory.”

Other local top-20 finishers were: Frewsburg’s Xander Pitts, ninth place; Frewsburg’s Juvenal Diaz, 10th place; Frewsburg’s Toby Gifford, 11th place; Franklinville/Ellicottville’s Grant Cornell, 12th place; Gowanda’s Drew Shull, 13th place; Frewsburg’s Cody Kent, 14th place; and Frewsburg’s Noah Collins, 19th place.

“That Frewsburg team runs in a tough pack and they ran a great race today,” Zuroski said. “I was really proud of my boys today for gutting that one out.”

The Red Dragons’ Abby Brunenavs won the girls Class D individual title with a time of 20:25.21. Her teammates Allison Bohall, second place; Hannah Tarbrake, ninth place; Lily Bohall, 10th place; and Lizzie Lai, 15th place, figured into the winning team score. “We went into today knowing this race was going to be a battle until the end,” Zuroski said. “C/S/P’s girls run with grit and their pack makes for tough competition. … Our girls team suffered some tough losses to C/S/P earlier in the season and I know that movitated them to run hungry like they did today.”
