Six local football teams that will be in action during this weekend’s Section VI football semifinals were mentioned in the latest New York State Sportswriters Association rankings released Tuesday.
Jamestown and Randolph were the highest-ranked local teams in their respective classes, holding down the No. 2 spots in Class A and Class D, respectively.
The Red Raiders, a perfect 9-0 on the season, will host Class A honorable-mention Williamsville South (7-2) at 7 p.m. Friday at Strider Field. Earlier this season, the Billies gave Jamestown its closest game of the season when they scored 14 points in the fourth quarter of a 42-37 Red Raiders’ victory.
In Class D, the Cardinals will host honorable-mention Portville in the semifinals at 7 p.m. Friday at Salamanca’s Veterans Field. In their regular-season matchup during Week 5, Randolph beat the Panthers 51-8 as Xander Hind ran 22 times for 238 yards and three touchdowns.
The other Class D semifinal pits No. 7 Clymer/Sherman/Panama (7-2) against No. 12 Franklinville/Ellicottville (6-2) at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Panama’s Jack Keeney Community Field. During Week 6, the Wolfpack beat the Titans 16-12 in Franklinville. Trent Burchanowski ran 19 times for 108 yards and a touchdown while Lucas Lisciandro also caught a touchdown from Kurtis Olson. For Franklinville/Ellicottville, Blake Frank and Logan Grinols each caught a touchdown pass from Lucas Marsh.
The game featured multiple swings in momentum, mainly due to the fact that the teams combined to throw five interceptions and fumble the ball away twice.
In Class C, No. 6 Fredonia (9-0) will take on honorable-mention Southwestern at 7 p.m. Friday at Dunkirk High School’s Karl Hoeppner Field. The teams met in Week 4 with the Hillbillies beating the Trojans 27-25.
Southwestern’s Aidan Kennedy threw for 254 yards and a touchdown while also running for 131 yards and three touchdowns. The Trojans scored 18 points in the fourth quarter, including Kennedy’s 17-yard touchdown run with no time remaining on the clock. But Fredonia stuffed Southwestern’s 2-point conversion attempt and walked away in control of Class C South.
Hillbillies quarterback Nick Whitfield ran for 130 yards and three touchdowns while Matt Lotter added 141 yards on the ground in the victory.
Salamanca, which lost to Lackawanna last Friday, fell to honorable mention in Class C.
Frewsburg, the No. 1 seed in the Section V 8-man football playoffs and No. 8 in the state rankings, will host a semifinal Friday at 7 p.m. against Canisteo-Greenwood. The Bears (6-0) and Redskins (5-2) did not meet during the regular season.
In Class AA, No. 14 Bennett will host Orchard Park at All-High Stadium and No. 18 Lancaster will host No. 21 Clarence on Friday.
In the other Class A semifinal, honorable-mention Frontier will host No. 22 Hamburg.
The Class B semifinals are Iroquois, the state’s top-ranked team, hosting honorable-mention Albion and No. 16 WNY Maritime hosting honorable-mention West Seneca East.
Class C’s other semifinal features state No. 1 Medina hosting honorable-mention Lackawanna.
