WESTFIELD — Jeff Collver isn’t quite sure if he’s ever had three freshmen play significant minutes during his 20 years on the Frewsburg bench.
If the Bears are going to be successful this season, it is likely going to be due in large part to their ninth-graders.
Teghan Trocki, Taytum Jimerson and Ava Jimerson looked the part Thursday night in a 58-27 nonleague win over Westfield/Brocton.
Trocki finished with a game-high 17 points to go along with five steals, four assists and three rebounds; Ava Jimerson had 8 points, seven steals and five rebounds; and Taytum Jimerson had 6 points, four steals and two assists.
“Those kids played way beyond their years,” Collver said postgame.

Senior Elise Sposato chipped in 15 points, five rebounds, three assists and two steals while fellow senior Tyra Clark had a game-high 11 rebounds.
“I kept asking Elise and Tyra … are you happy with these youngsters? ‘Oh yeah, they’re playing great,'” Collver added. “I don’t think they realized they were so young.”
Frewsburg took control of the game with its traditional full-court press, forcing the Wolverines (0-1) into 12 turnovers in the opening eight minutes as the Bears built a 20-5 lead.
“Taytum was unbelievable defensively. With as tiny as she is, she was terrific. (Haleigh) Dellow was a foot taller than her and she was right up in her shorts giving her all she could handle,” Collver said. “Ava plays like Ava plays. She’s strong, she’s aggressive. She didn’t really surprise me.”
The lead grew to 25 by halftime as Trocki hit her first of a game-high three 3-pointers during a 15-5 second quarter.
“It’s been difficult because we have so much that we want to put in. … As you saw by the beginning of tonight’s game, we started off very well in the press,” first-year Westfield/Brocton head coach Chris Dole said. “Once we got tired, mentally we got tired.”
Dellow scored all 10 of her points during the second half for Westfield/Brocton, but by that point it was too late.
“She’s got our most experience in basketball. She plays outside of school, too, and I’ve had some experience coaching her,” Dole said of Dellow. “She knows when to take over the basketball game, but she has to learn how to distribute the basketball to our kids on the floor when they need to have it. She’s picking that up quickly.”
For the game, Frewsburg had 21 steals on 38 Wolverines’ turnovers and turned them into 33 of their 58 points. All seven players made at least two field goals.
“What you saw is how they play all the time. They all look for each other,” Collver said. “There is nobody who wants to shoot any more than anybody else. They are very unselfish and really like each other.”
The Bears turned the ball over just 11 times and only four were from their freshmen. Westfield/Brocton was only able to take advantage for 7 points.
“We tried to do the same thing right back to them. As you saw, we went right to the (final) buzzer with it. We are going to try and make that our identity,” Dole said. “It’s a different Westfield team. We told them, this is not the same old Westfield team. We are going to try to do things differently and get everybody involved, which we did tonight.”
NOTES: Frewsburg shot 25 of 75 (33.3%) from the floor, including 5 of 24 (20.8%) from 3-point range. “Despite the fact they were way taller than us, we moved the ball around the perimeter,” Collver said. “We got wide open looks. We didn’t shoot very well.” … Westfield/Brocton was 10 of 33 (30.3%) from the field, including 1 of 8 (12.5%) from 3-point range. … Jena Vacanti and Dellow each grabbed six rebounds for the Wolverines.
