BUFFALO — Sawyer Devoe was on fire.
Pacey Hopkins was pretty hot, too.
Throw in a decided advantage on the glass and top-ranked Avoca/Prattsburgh led from start to finish, downing No. 2 Westfield 78-56 in the Class D Far West Regional at Buffalo State Sports Arena on Saturday afternoon.
The win advances the Vikings (25-0), winners of their last 36 straight, into the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Final Four in Glens Falls this weekend.
The Wolverines, meanwhile, saw their 21-game winning streak come to an end and finish one of the finest seasons in school history 22-2.

“We couldn’t get a rebound,” Westfield coach Nolan Swanson said. “We couldn’t get a defensive rebound. … I think that was where the game was won. … They were a little too quick. We were bigger, but they were quicker under there. We just couldn’t come up with the loose ones.”
The Wolverines couldn’t contain Sawyer, a junior, or Hopkins, a senior, either. Together, they combined for 55 points, routinely hitting big buckets when Westfield threatened to make it a game.
Case in point was the start of the third quarter. Although leading 35-27 at the break, the Vikings saw the Wolverines finish the first half on a mini 5-0 run, capped by Ethan Weingart’s trey at the buzzer. But Hopkins scored five straight points, including a 3-pointer, and Hayden Abbott added another trey, pushing Avoca/Prattsburgh’s lead to 43-27.
“The same thing happened,” Swanson said. “They got four offensive rebounds the first two possessions, they kicked it out, made threes and got eight fast points. We just couldn’t stop that.”
Swanson called a timeout, but the Wolverines’ issues on the glass and failures at the foul line — they missed seven free throws in the third quarter — left them with a 53-36 deficit heading into the final period.
They got no closer the rest of the way.
Devoe poured in 30 points, including 14 in the fourth quarter; Hopkins had 25; and Abbott collected 14.
Westfield was led by Darien Swanson’s 18 points, six rebounds, five assists and three steals. Weingart added 13 points and six boards; Carson Swanson collected 9 points and four assists; Cole Holland had 7 points and four steals; and Wyatt Schuster added eight rebounds and three blocks.
But it wasn’t enough to advance to Glens Falls this weekend.
“It was an incredible season with the record we had,” Swanson said. “Obviously, that game got away in the third quarter. I didn’t think we had the best game we’ve ever had, obviously. They had a good, quick team. We just couldn’t deal with the rebounding.
“The season, though? We’ll never forget it.”
