Third-period collapse sends Blue Devils to 5-2 defeat
Tied 2-2 midway through the third period, the visiting Morrisville Mustangs exploded for three goals to claim a 5-2 victory against the Fredonia State men’s hockey team on Saturday.
Jeston Somero scored the first two goals, then Ryan Glazer put the game away for Morrisville State with the third goal of the period, an empty-netter.
The Devils took control early, scoring twice inside the first five minutes of the game. Ryan Bailey and Antonio Demacopoulos staked the Devils to a 2-0 lead. Ethan Pitzman and Craig McCabe were credited with assists.
The Mustangs would battle back, tying the game with goals at the 12:41 mark and the 19:27 mark of the first period.
Following the flurry of goals in the first period, neither team would score in the second period. Both teams would be called for four penalties, but could not take advantage.
Fredonia State netminder Logan Dyck made 32 saves. Ryan Creenan made 19 saves for the Mustangs.
The Devils are now 1-1 in the SUNYAC and 1-4 overall. Morrisville is 1-3 in the conference and 2-3 overall.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
ROCHESTER — The Fredonia State men’s basketball team dropped an 81-46 game to U.T. Dallas in the consolation game of the Chuck Resler Tournament on Saturday.
AJ Knight had 11 points, seven steals and five rebounds to pace the Devils. Aaron Collins added 8 points.
The Comets used and early 17-0 run to jump out to a 22-5 lead. By the half, they were up 40-21.
The Devils were slowed by 5-of-31 shooting from 3-point land and 25% shooting from the floor. They were also out-rebounded 49-29.
Following the game, Knight was named to the All Tournament Team.
Fredonia State fell to Trinity (Texas) University 83-48 in the first round Friday. Matt Aebersold led the Devils with 10 points and eight rebounds.
Knight added 9 points, and Collins and My’Kell Kaigler chipped in 8 points apiece.
The teams kept things close the first six-and-a-half minutes. A free throw by Alon Kremerman put the Devils up 8-6. At the 12:53 mark, a layup by Trinity’s AJ Clark gave the Tigers a 9-8 lead that they would maintain the rest of the way.
With 3:48 left to play, a layup by Kremerman pulled the Devils to within a point, 20-19. Trinity closed the half on a 12-4 run to take a 32-23 led into the break.
Trinity turned up the heat in the second half. The Tigers would hit on 56% of their shots from the floor (19 of 34) and go 5 of 9 from 3-point land in the frame.
For the game, the Devils struggled from the field, shooting 7 of 34 (21%) from 3-point range, and hit 18 of 63 (29%) from the floor.
Trinity had three players score in double digits, led by Clark with 15. The Tigers improved to 1-0.
The Devils head to Hilbert College on Tuesday as part of a men’s/women’s doubleheader. They tip off at 5:30 p.m.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
CHATHAM, Pa. — The Fredonia State women’s basketball team dropped a 65-56 contest at Chatham College on Saturday afternoon.
Caitlin Snyder put in a solid performance with 21 points, seven rebounds and two steals. Freshman Amber Louis added 10 points off the bench.
The first half was back and forth, with the Devils staking a 13-10 lead after the first quarter. Chatham would muster a 25-23 lead by the half.
The third quarter spelled doom for Fredonia State as the Blue Devils were outscored 27-14, falling behind by 15 points. But they would battle back.
Early in the fourth, Snyder would hit back-to-back jumpers to pull the Devils within six points, 54-48, with seven minutes to play. Snyder scored eight points in the first three minutes of the fourth to aid an 11-2 run to keep Fredonia State close.
Renee Park had a team-high five assists, and Laurell Brown added eight rebounds and four assists.
A strong fourth quarter by Fredonia State helped the Devils to a 66-57 victory over visiting William Smith College on Friday.
Park led the team with 23 points while freshmen Sarah Seaman and Laurell Brown both kicked in 12 apiece.
Leading by just a point early in the fourth, the Devils would eventually lead by as many as 13 late in the fourth.
The Devils offense got off to a hot start, putting up 20 points in the first quarter en route to a 20-14 lead. The Herons would cut the lead to two, 29-27, by the half.
Neither team would be able to pull away. The Herons scored the first bucket of the fourth quarter to make it a one-point game, 43-42, in favor of the Devils.
The Devils responded with an 8-0 run that included 3s by Seaman and Park, and a layup from Park. The Devils would eventually lead by as many as 13 points, 64-51 with 1:44 left to play, to close out the game.
Park added five assists to her stat line, while Snyder had a game-high eight rebounds. Freshman Amber Louis added nine points.
The Devils shot 41% from the floor, including an 8-of-25 effort on 3s. The Herons shot 37%, and were 6 of 16 from beyond the arc.
Lauren DeVaney led the Herons with 17 points and Brooke Jarvis added 16.
The Devils head to Hilbert College on Tuesday for a nonconference contest.
SWIMMING
The Fredonia State women’s swim team defeated Alfred University 143-118 and fell to the University of Rochester 188-88 in a tri meet in Steele Hall on Saturday.
Kayla Hagen was first in the 50-yard freestyle (1:25.34) and second in both the 200-yard backstroke (2:18.36) and 200-yard individual medley (2:22.91).
Cleo McDermott was second in the 1,000-yard freestyle (12:36.42).
Rachael Mayou finished second in the 500-yard freestyle (5:40.14) and 200-yard freestyle (2:07.59).
Mindy Doktor was third in the 100-yard butterfly (1:04.33) and 200-yard individual medley (2:29.05).
Kaylee Constantino finished second in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:13.45) while teaming up with Hagen, Doktor and Mayou to place second in the 200-yard medley relay (1:57.27).
The men’s team fell to the University of Rochester 221-41 and to Alfred University 230-48.
Patrick McCrone won the 100-yard backstroke in 1:55.0 and was second in the 1,000-yard freestyle in a time of 10:39.68.
The Blue Devils host Medaille College next Saturday.
