Dunkirk senior heading to states this weekend

Ten local student-athletes will be competing in the New York State Public High School Athletic Association boys Swimming & Diving Championships this weekend at Ithaca College.

Frewsburg/Southwestern will be sending seven boys, Jamestown/Falconer will send two and Dunkirk/Fredonia/Forestville will send one for competition that begins Friday with swimming warmups at 8 a.m.

A quartet from Frewsburg/Southwestern will be the first local swimmers in the pool when the 200-yard medley relay preliminaries kick off the weekend at 10 a.m. Landon Frederes, the first eighth-grader from Frewsburg to ever compete in the state meet, will swim the backstroke. He will be joined by Southwestern senior Brady Lindstrom, who will swim the breaststroke leg, Southwestern freshman Grady Moore, who will swim the butterfly leg, and Southwestern senior Logan Hren, who will anchor the relay. Frewsburg/Southwestern’s relay is one of 20 in the field of 43 with a time in the 1:38s or better.

Southwestern senior Gannon Moore and Jamestown/Falconer sophomore Conner Dean will be the next local swimmers in the pool as they compete in heat 2 out of 5 in the 200-yard freestyle. Moore enters with a seed time of 1:46.58 while Dean is just behind at 1:46.73. The top seed is Henry Amar, a senior from Fordham Prep with a seed time of 1:39.43.

Two local swimmers will also compete in the 50-yard freestyle. Frewsburg/Southwestern freshman Miles Moore will swim in heat 2 out of 6 with a seed time of 22.01 seconds, while Dunkirk/Fredonia/Forestville senior Adam Fred will swim in heat 4 out of 6 with a seed time of 21.89 seconds. The top seed is senior Jerrell Sackett of Section IV Waverly with a seed time of 20.76 seconds.

Grady Moore will compete in his lone individual event of the weekend when he takes to the pool for the 100-yard butterfly. Moore will swim in heat 1 out of 6 with a seed time of 53.87 seconds. The top seed is senior Ryan Nunez of Kellenberg with a seed time of 48.65 seconds.

Three local swimmers will compete in the 100-yard freestyle. Miles Moore will swim in heat 2 out of 6 along with Jamestown/Falconer junior Aidan McCleery. Moore’s seed time is 48.57 seconds and McCleery’s is 48.61 seconds. Gannon Moore will swim in heat 5 out of 6. His seed time if 47.22 seconds. The top seed is senior Stephen McDonald of Chaminade with a seed time of 45.50 seconds.

Two local swimmers will take to the water in the 500-yard freestyle. Dean will swim in heat 3 out of 4 with a seed time of 4:50.36, while Hren will swim in heat 4 out of 4 with a seed time of 4:51.19. The top seed is senior Patrick Broderick of Section VIII Manhasset with a time of 4:35.68.

The final individual race for a local swimmer is the 100-yard backstroke where Fred will swim in heat 1 out of 5 with a seed time of 54.72 seconds. The top seed in the race is senior Nicholas Rhodes of Section VIII South Side/Lynbrook with a time of 48.87 seconds.

Miles Moore, Lindstrom, Grady Moore and Gannon Moore will swim in heat 3 out of 4 in the 200-yard freestyle relay with a seed time of 1:29.44. The top seed in the race is Chaminade with a seed time of 1:24.26.

The same four will swim in heat 1 out of 3 in the 400-yard freestyle relay with a seed time of 3:16.79. The top seed in that race is also Chaminade with a seed time of 3:05.81.

Frewsburg/Southwestern junior Alexander Pitts is the lone local diver in the 1-meter competition. Pitts enters with a seed score of 484.55 points. The top seed is senior Michael Wood of Section V Irondequoit with a score of 639.79.
