Swanson shines with assist from Maguire as Westfield downs Frewsburg

WEST ELLICOTT — Midway through the third quarter Friday evening, Carson Swanson rose up for a dunk and rattled the rim at Southwestern Central School’s gymnasium.

Unfortunately, the ball didn’t fall through the hoop.

It turned out to be the Westfield junior’s only misstep on the night.

Swanson scored 33 points, grabbed eight rebounds and handed out seven assists as the Wolverines beat Frewsburg 89-56 in the opening round of the Southwestern Tournament.

“He’s a great player, super quick. He’s explosive off the get-go. We tried to double him and trap him, and get him uncomfortable,” Frewsburg head coach Rob Collver said. “We obviously weren’t successful with a lot of it. They’re things we can work toward other teams with. Obviously, we’re not going to (face) a kid as good as him.”

Swanson wasn’t the only one lighting up the scoreboard for Westfield. Junior Zach Maguire added 17 points, while seniors Chris Vacanti, Aaron Fuller and Mikail Lawrence chipped in 13, 12 and 10 respectively.

“He’s a really good player. He hasn’t had much go his way yet this season, but I see it, it’s coming. … I’m trying to keep him positive,” Westfield head coach Nolan Swanson said of Maguire. “He’s such a good player and such a good shooter. … He’s a knockdown, spot-up shooter. He’s just moving a little too much in games.”

Senior Gavin Smith led the Bears (1-1) with 30 points, 27 of them coming after halftime. Senior Kael Collver added 14 points, 13 rebounds and three blocked shots.

“He has to continue being strong and getting the shots off, and making his free throws,” Coach Collver said of his nephew. ” … Kael is our height and we have to take advantage of that when we can. He battled three kids the same size as him tonight.”

The Wolverines took control immediately in the first quarter as Swanson scored 13 points, including back-to-back-to-back 3-pointers early. Westfield finished the period on a 7-0 run that included a three-point play from Fuller.

“It extends people out and often, in a lot of games, it brings a second extra defender for help,” Coach Swanson said of his son’s long-range shooting. “We just try to get the ball to the high post or the low post to find some work inside for those guys.”

Frewsburg went just 1 of 16 from the field and turned the ball over six times in the first quarter.

“They missed a lot of shots, but they got a lot of offensive rebounds. … I couldn’t believe we had that lead, giving up that many shots,” Coach Swanson said. “We couldn’t get a stinking rebound.”

Smith picked up his third foul during the second quarter and sat until after halftime. Without him for much of the frame, the Bears made just 3 of 15 shots from the field and turned the ball over another four times, which allowed the Wolverines to lead 49-22 at halftime.

“We’ve practiced for four weeks in our old gym and our shooting is going to struggle in December,” said Coach Collver, whose Bears couldn’t get into Frewsburg’s main gym until their first game Thursday due to renovations. “… We got the looks … they just didn’t fall. … Everything they shot went in.”

Smith went off after halftime with all nine of his field goals, including six 3-pointers, and Westfield outscored Frewsburg just 40-34 over the final 16 minutes, but the first-half damage was too much to overcome for the Bears.

“When Gavin is out, we lose the offense, we lose the defensive command because he kind of controls everything,” Coach Collver said. “I have to do a better job of managing that, but also we have to be smarter. His third foul was dumb.”

Westfield, which beat Panama in its Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association Division 2 West opener Thursday night, will play for a third straight day when it takes on host Southwestern in today’s 4:30 p.m. championship game.

“They had a lot of good players graduate,” Coach Swanson said of the Trojans. ” … We’re pretty thin right now. Being able to sit some of my big guys each quarter was an idea I had before the game began, as long as everything was going well.”

NOTES: Frewsburg will take on Ellicottville in today’s 3 p.m. consolation game. … Westfield shot 35 of 72 (48.6%) from the field, including 9 of 23 (39.1%) from 3-point range, and turned the ball over eight times. Maguire had 12 rebounds and three blocked shots; Fuller had six rebounds and six assists; and Vacanti had five rebounds. … Frewsburg shot 15 of 61 (24.6%) from the field, including 7 of 20 (35%) from 3-point range, and turned the ball over 17 times.
