FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — Spring Break has started, but on Saturday the Dunkirk baseball team got right to work down south in Fayetteville, North Carolina.

The Marauders began their season against Lee County and despite a nice start with the bats fell 6-2 at Freedom Christian Academy.

“We came out swinging and jumped on a quality arm,” Dunkirk head coach Frank Jagoda stated. “Defensively, we lost our way early in the game, but I’m very pleased with our overall composure. Everything we did to hurt ourselves Lee County took advantage of.”

Paul Trippy was responsible for the strong start with a leadoff single and then made his way to scoring position on an error in a pickoff attempt. Donnie Jackson brought Trippy home with a hit, but he was eventually gunned down at the plate attempting to score on a Jon Ganey hit.

Trippy scored again in the fifth inning, this time reaching on a double and was advanced to third by another Jackson hit before scoring on a passed ball.

The Marauders swiped four bags on the day with Thomas Shaffer, Tony Piede, Dylan Bankoski and Jackson earning the steals.

Dunkirk sent three pitchers to the mound with Greg Orcutt getting the start. Orcutt went two innings with Lee County having most of its success against him, before Zach Zentz pitched three innings and Shaffer finished the final inning.

The Marauders are back in action today against Jack Britt, North Carolina and then play North Moore on Tuesday.
