Swanson, Hind, Brown named first-team all-state; Fredonia’s White selected to second team

Three local small-school boys basketball players received some of the highest honors possible Wednesday when they were named first-team all-state by the New York State Sportswriters Association.

The trio was among 15 local student-athletes who were named in Classes B, C and D.

Carson Swanson, the Post-Journal/OBSERVER Player of the Year, and Drew Hind were named to the Class C first team, while Salamanca’s Lucus Brown was named to the first team in Class B.

Swanson, a Westfield junior, led Section VI in scoring at 28.7 points per game, and in total assists (152) and steals (121). He also grabbed 126 rebounds and blocked 20 shots en route to being named a Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association Division 2 West co-Player of the Year. Swanson’s Wolverines lost in the Section VI Class C championship game.

Hind, a Randolph junior, was the CCAA Division 1 East Player of the Year after averaging 21.3 points per game to go along with 90 rebounds, 89 assists and 59 steals. Hind’s Cardinals beat Westfield in the Section VI Class C final before losing in the Far West Regional.

Brown, a Salamanca senior, led Section VI in total points with 653 to go along with 145 rebounds, 101 steals and 79 assists. He was named the CCAA Division 1 West Player of the Year and led the Warriors to their second New York State Public High School Athletic Association final four in the last three years.

Fredonia senior Davion White was named to the Class B second team. He averaged 18.0 points per game, while grabbing 158 rebounds to go along with 55 assists, 31 steals and 15 blocked shots.

Panama junior Carter Brink received Class C second-team honors. A CCAA Division 2 West co-Player of the Year, he averaged 25.7 points per game and handed out 107 assists to go along with 90 rebounds and 57 steals.

Falconer sophomore Roger Markham was named to the Class B third team. He averaged 18.0 points per game, handed out 106 assists, grabbed 103 rebounds and picked up 76 steals for the Section VI Class B2 champs.

Frewsburg senior Gavin Smith received Class C fifth-team recognition. He averaged 25.7 points per game and grabbed 150 rebounds along with 65 steals while also handing out 51 assists.

Pine Valley senior Jon Sheldon was named to the Class D fifth team. He led the Section VI Class D champs in scoring at 15.1 points per game and picked up a team-high 93 steals to go along with 199 rebounds, 50 assists and 26 blocked shots.

Gowanda senior Quentin Centner was named to the Class C sixth team. He led the Panthers in scoring at 22.2 points per game.

Ellicottville senior Owen Chudy and North Collins senior Derek Ebersole were both named to the Class C 10th team. Chudy led Ellicottville in scoring at 16.8 points per game and rebounding with 256 to go along with 38 steals, 31 assists and 12 blocked shots. Ebersole, the CCAA Division 2 East Player of the Year, led North Collins in scoring at 24.5 points per game, steals with 97 and assists with 85, while also grabbing 93 rebounds.

Fredonia senior Mike Hahn was an honorable-mention selection in Class B. Randolph senior Roan Kelly received honorable-mention recognition in Class C. Clymer senior Kaden Beckerink and Pine Valley senior Miles Volk received honorable-mention recognition in Class D.

Other Section VI players honored included: Eden senior Taesyn Slating (Class B second team), MST Seneca senior Shamere Davis (Class B sixth team), Newfane senior Landon Braman (Class B seventh team), Newfane senior Ben Dickinson (Class B 11th team), Olmsted senior Ezekiel Alexander (Class B honorable mention), East Aurora senior Patrick Bodecker (Class B honorable mention), Cleveland Hill senior Cameron D’Hilly (Class B honorable mention), Allegany-Limestone junior Carson Kwiatkowski (Class B honorable mention), Olmsted sophomore Jacari McCray (Class B honorable mention) and Barker senior Luey Castro (Class C ninth team).

Stillwater senior Jaxon Mueller was the Player of the Year in Class B, Moravia senior Abram Wasileski and Haldane senior Matt Nachamkin shared the honor in Class C, and Sackets Harbor senior Austin Griner won the award in Class D.
