Jail staff aid inmate after suicide attempt

MAYVILLE — Corrections officers helped save an inmate’s life following a reported suicide attempt Thursday night at the Chautauqua County Jail, Sheriff James Quattrone confirmed.

The male inmate, who is not being named, was found hanging in his cell around 9 p.m. by an officer in charge of the unit while making routine rounds. In fact, Quattrone said the employee of the 15 E. Chautauqua St. county jail made the round earlier than usual.

“Proper protocols” were followed, the sheriff said, allowing corrections officers to quickly get the inmate’s cell door open and provide emergency care. Mayville volunteer firefighters and county EMS personnel were called to the jail, and the male was transported to UPMC Chautauqua in Jamestown for treatment of injuries to his neck.

The inmate was later returned to the county jail. Quattrone said the male is being monitored by medical and mental health staff along with corrections officers to ensure his safety.

“It really was a great job by our correction officers to save the individual’s life,” Quattrone told The Post-Journal. “Their professionalism and diligence in doing their jobs not only discovered the attempt but also permitted them to treat the subject and get him to the hospital for further evaluation/treatment.”
