Thirty years ago — 1991
Dunkirk native Norm Hitzges, a nationally known radio and television announcer, recently released a new sports book full of little-known facts and figures running the gamut of sports and sporting events. The 384-page book, “The Norm Hitzges Historical Sports Almanac,” is the culmination of his desire to be allknowing about sports and is full of facts, photos and fun.
Forty years ago — 1981
Douglas Dikeman, 17, of East Lake Road, Westfield raised a hog that was named as the State Grand Champion Market Hog at the State Fair in Syracuse. Doug, a senior at Westfield Academy and Central School, entered five swine in the State Fair. He also had the Reserve Grand Champion 4-H Market Hog and the Reserve Champion 4-H Swine Showman.
Fifty years ago — 1971
Cardinal Josef Mindszenty today ended 15 years of self-imposed refuge in the U.S. Embassy in Budapest and flew to Rome, ending a saga that began in 1956 when Soviet tanks crushed the Hungarian rebellion. Mindszenty is now 79 years old.
