Thirty years ago — 1992 The nearly 17-year-old steeple at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church in Dunkirk is being repaired by Campbellsville Construction Co. of Kentucky, the company that originally fabricated the steeple. The work was necessitated by the recent wind storm, which detached two panels from the structure. The steeple is further being secured and repaired. Thirty years ago — 1992 The first recipient of an award established in honor of former OBSERVER reporter and Dunkirk resident Philip McGan has been announced. James D. Heil, 25, of Houston, Texas was recently named in a national magazine as the winner of the first annual Philip McGan Silver Antenna Award for excellence in amateur radio public relations. Thirty years ago — 1992 The Community Christmas/ Sharing With Children Toy Drive has moved to a new location, the old Meister Contracting Company building at 100 Ruggles St. in Dunkirk. Heading up the drive are Chet Kozlowski, Clara Ameno and Bill Dybeck. The drive is entering its fifth year. Forty years ago – 1982 A new hydraulic elevator has been installed at Brocton Central School by L.H. Ludwig & Co. Inc. of Falconer. The total cost of the project is estimated at $86,000. Thirty years ago — 1992 The Dunkirk Local Development Corp. has approved a $37,500 loan to a local couple renovating the former West End Diner on Lake Shore Drive West. Randy and Cheryl Goss are the owners of the soon-to-be restaurant and convenience store that will be known as Leonardo Da Vinci’s Gallery of Food, or simply, “Lenny’s.” Randy Goss said he hopes to have the business open by June and plans to use a deck in front for seasonal activities such as picnic tables in the fall and a Santa’s gift shack for children at Christmas time. Thirty years ago — 1992 The name of James P. Subjack, Dunkirk native and former city clerk, will be proposed to Gov. Mario Cuomo for appointment as Chautauqua County District Attorney. Mr. Subjack was the only attorney to file an application for the appointment. Mr. Subjack, a Democrat, will be replacing Republican John T. Ward, who mounts the bench as County Court judge on Jan. 1.
