Thirty years ago — 1992 A Mass was celebrated recently in anticipation of the birth of the Infant Jesus in the barn at the home of Alphonse and Irene Tarnowski on South Roberts Road in Dunkirk. Bundled against the winter cold, families gathered to pray, receive Holy Communion and sing the traditional songs of Christmas with background sounds provided by live farm animals housed in the barn and the family dog. The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Halas of Westfield, she is the secretary- treasurer of the National Honor Society, a four-year member of chorus, and a cheerleader and softball player. As a freshman, she took third place in the Buffalo News Spelling Bee. Jennifer plans to attend Houghton College to become an elementary school teacher. Thirty years ago — 1992 The state education commissioner says he will recommend about 150 school districts that should consider merging with neighbors in order to cut costs. Education Commissioner Thomas Sobel is also recommending that the Legislature give him the power to order school districts to consolidate even if they don’t want to. He’s highly unlikely to get his wish. The state currently has 717 separate school districts.
