Orders being taken for fishpond stocking sale

The Chautauqua County Soil and Water Conservation District is taking orders for its fall fishpond stocking sale.

Brook trout (2-3“), channel catfish (4-5”), largemouth bass (2“), Japanese koi (4-5” and 8-9“) and triploid grass carp (9-12”) are available for private pond owners to purchase and are expected to be distributed the third week of September at the Frank W. Bratt Agricultural Center on Turner Road in Jamestown.

Prior to stocking fish and triploid grass carp in pond obtain a farm fishpond license and/or a Grass Carp Stocking Permit from the state DEC. While a farm fishpond license is necessary, pond owners do not need to submit a farm fishpond license with your order. A grass carp permit is only necessary for those who plan to purchase triploid grass carp. Buyers will be required to submit all three copies of a grass carp permit with an order form when purchasing triploid grass carp.

An order form can be downloaded by emailing chaut-co@soilwater.org. All those who purchase fish will receive a sales receipt, the pick-up date and time, as well as, transportation instructions via USPS mail or email.

Recommended stocking rates are 25 brook trout, 25 channel catfish and/or 25 largemouth bass per quarter- to half-acres of pond surface area. The minimum order for bass, catfish and trout is 25. The order deadline is Sept. 1 and the availability of brook trout and largemouth bass is limited.

The district office is closed to the public, but district staff will be available to answer any questions by phone Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at 664-2351, ext. 5.
