Tom Roberts Hot 3, Karl/Marks Show to perform at Jazz Fest

JAMESTOWN – The Tom Roberts Hot 3 Band and the Karl/Marks Show will headline Jamestown Community College’s Jazz Fest on Friday.

Admission to the 7 p.m. performance in Scharmann Theatre is $4, general public $3, area students and senior citizens $2.

The performance is sponsored by JCC’s arts, humanities and health sciences division and college programming committee.

The Tom Roberts Hot 3 consists of pianist Tom Roberts, trombonist Peter Pepke and drummer Damian Buccigrossi.

Roberts, who is also a composer and arranger, performed on “The Tonight Show” and “A Prairie Home Companion.” He was pianist for Vince Giordano and the Nighthawks, recent Grammy winners for the “Boardwalk Empire” soundtrack, and arranged and performed the music for the “The Aviator” soundtrack and several titles for “DeLovely.”

He has also arranged music for the syndicated PRI show “Riverwalk Jazz, Live from the Landing with the Jim Cullum Jazz Band, and a number of pieces for Wynton Marsalis and The Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra. Roberts was also the featured pianist at the International Stride Piano Summit in Zurich, Switzerland in 2001 and 2009.

Originally from Pittsburgh, Roberts performed twice at New York’s Carnegie Hall in 2003, once with Skitch Henderson and the New York Pops. He was featured in 2003 in solo with Dick Hyman at the prestigious Jazz In July series at New York’s 92nd St. Y.

Roberts has recorded over 40 compact discs and has performed throughout the U.S. and Europe. He tours worldwide, performing with bands from New Orleans and New York, including the Original Dixieland Jazzband and the Louisiana Repertory Jazz Ensemble.

Roberts is also a versatile music historian with a special focus on the early jazz era.

Trombonist and singer Pepke is celebrating his 60th year as a professional musician. In addition to thousands of appearances in western New York and Pennsylvania, he has given jazz performances in New Orleans, Seattle, Syracuse, Germany and Atlantic City.

Buccigrossi, a drummer, is an avid record collector and a former student of well-known drummer Roger Humphries. A student of historic drum styles, Buccigrossi is also a prolific visual artist whose specialty is collages.

He performed with Roberts in “Friends of Fats,” a Fats Waller tribute band, playing venues in Oil City and Pittsburgh. He also performed with Roberts in 2014 at the prestigious “Bach, Beethoven and Brunch” event in Pittsburgh.

The Karl/Marks Show consists of pianist Mark Alpaugh and guitarist Karl Lydell, graduates of JCC’s music program. The duo plays a mix of classic jazz songs, American standards, and audience favorites.

Alpaugh, who also attended the Berklee College of Music and the State University of New York at Fredonia, holds a master’s degree in music education.

He teaches at Washington Middle School, is the jazz ensemble instructor at Infinity Performing Arts and an active church musician, and performs in several area groups.

Lydell performed in JCC’s stage band and jazz ensemble as a student. He earned a bachelor’s degree in theatre at SUNY Oswego and later taught guitar and directed the jazz and pop ensembles at JCC.

Besides the Karl/Marks Show, Lydell performs with No Limit and Smokehouse.
