JAMESTOWN – A Jamestown man is in police custody after allegedly stealing silver chains from Carlson’s Jewelry early Wednesday afternoon.

Jamestown Police charged Darius Coleman, 28, with fourth-degree grand larceny and took him to Jamestown City Jail to await arraignment.

According to Chris Roberts, co-proprietor of Carlson’s Jewelry, a young, African-American male entered the store in the early afternoon and asked to see some silver chains. When the display of chains was presented to the man, he grabbed a handful of them and ran out of the store. According to Roberts, the man ran down Main Street, where he removed the green hooded sweatshirt, as well as the black hooded sweatshirt underneath it, which he was wearing while in the store.

Immediately following the theft, officers responded to the area, but were not able to immediately locate the suspect. Officers later located a subject matching Coleman’s description at an address on East Fifth Street.

“The total value of the items stolen is approximately $2,000,” said Capt. Robert Samuelson. “There were 18-20 separate silver chains which were stolen, however Coleman was not in possession of the chains when he was apprehended.”

Samuelson believes that Coleman was able to pass off the chains before being apprehended, and police are now searching for the stolen merchandise. They are looking for any assistance from the public in locating the silver chains.

“Our investigation is continuing, and there is some work to be done, but the priority right now is recovering the stolen merchandise and returning it to the owner.”

The Jamestown Police Department is asking anyone who witnesses or is solicited by someone selling chains to report the activity to the JPD tip line at 483-8477. All calls will be kept confidential.

Gowanda woman charged with DWI on lawnmower

GOWANDA – A Gowanda woman has been charged with driving while intoxicated while operating a lawnmower.

According to Gowanda Police, Angi L. Witczak, 39, of East Main Street was charged with driving while intoxicated, aggravated DWI, first-degree aggravated unlicensed operation and a headlight violation on June 20.

Police observed Witczak operating a lawnmower tractor traveling down the middle of Erie Avenue with no headlights at 9:47 p.m. Witczak was stopped and was allegedly found to be intoxicated. A chemical breath test found Witczak had a blood alcohol content of .29, more than three times the legal limit for alcohol.

Witczak was also found to have a revoked license for a prior DWI. She was released on an appearance ticket for Collins Town Court.

Chautauqua County Court

District Attorney, David W. Foley, announced the following pleas and sentences in Chautauqua County Court:

Luis Morales-Pagan, 50, of 60 Temple St., Fredonia, was sentenced to three years in state prison with three years post release supervision for second-degree assault.

Jennifer A. Gens, 36, of 6 Oak St., Mayville, was sentenced to one and a half to four and a half years in state prison for third-degree robbery concurrent with time served for two counts of petit larceny.

Edgardo A. Calderon, 32, of 160 Barrows St., Jamestown, was sentenced to one to three years in state prison for second-degree attempted assault.

Rafael Fuentes, 41, of 172 Eagle St., Fredonia, was sentenced to five years probation, a $2,000 fine and 60 months ignition interlock device for felony DWI.

Bruce A. Kaus, 36, of 40 Armadillo St. Dunkirk, was sentenced to five years probation, a $2,000 fine and 60 months ignition interlock device for felony DWI.

Sherry M. Moore, 34, of 2979 Kimball St., Gerry, was sentenced to five years probation for third-degree criminal possession of marijuana.

Alan T. Hoelzle, 28, of 5731 Route 15, Westfield, was sentenced to three years probation and a $1,500 fine for misdemeanor DWI.

Thomas A. Brewster, 27, of 509 Cardinal St., Dunkirk, was sentenced to one year in jail and three years ignition interlock device for felony DWI.

Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office

CHAUTAUQUA – Robert Sass, 56, of North East, Pa., was charged with driving while intoxicated with a blood alcohol content of .08 or more and speeding on June 22. Deputies stopped Sass’ vehicle on Route 394 for speeding and was found that Sass was intoxicated. He was released on an appearance ticket for Chautauqua Town Court.

STOCKTON – A 17-year-old Westfield female was charged with following too closely and speed not reasonable and prudent following an accident on Dean Road on June 23.

At 3 p.m. deputies responded to a two-vehicle accident in the town of Stockton. Charcy A. Kinney, 40, of Stockton was slowing to turn into her driveway when she was rear ended by the youth’s vehicle. Both drivers were not injured but a youth in Kinney’s vehicle was taken to Brooks Memorial Hospital for minor injuries.

The youth was released on an appearance ticket for Stockton Town Court.
