Water flushing to begin Monday in city
During the hours of midnight to approximately 6 a.m. starting on Monday, the city of Dunkirk will begin conducting our annual flushing of water mains and fire hydrants throughout the city.
This process will take approximately three weeks and during this time residents may, for brief periods, experience slightly cloudy water and reduced water pressure. The Water Department recommends that residents please let water run until clear before laundering and cooking.
Please contact the city of Dunkirk Water Maintenance Department at 716-366-3255 or Department of Public Works at 716-366-9832 with any questions or concerns.
Agency sounds alert on screening
Women who are age 40 or older should get a mammogram at least every other year. Earlier this year, national breast cancer screening guidelines were updated to recommend that most people get a screening mammogram every other year beginning at age 40 and continuing through age 74.
Lowering the screening age is an important change because more women in their 40s have been getting breast cancer, with rates increasing about 2% each year. Timely mammograms are essential because breast cancer is often easier to treat if found early.
The guidelines state that transgender men and nonbinary persons should also get screened for breast cancer beginning at age 40.
The Cancer Services Program (CSP) of Steuben, Allegany, Cattaraugus and Chautauqua Counties helps people without health insurance get free breast, cervical and colorectal cancer screening. If more testing is needed, our program can pay for that too. The agency will help enroll eligible people in the state Medicaid Cancer Treatment Program if cancer is found.
If you need breast, cervical or colorectal cancer screening, or want more information, please call the CSP at 1-877-778-6857.

‘Time Out’ program planned by library
SINCLAIRVILLE — The Sinclairville Free Library invites families to a “Time Out” program at the library on Monday at 6 p.m. Children will enjoy supervised activities in the children’s room while parents meet in the community room for an informal time to enjoy conversation.
Pizza will be provided to both groups so that parents have this night off from dinner duty. Space is limited, so pre-registration is required and can be made by calling the library at 716-962-5885 or by email to info@sinclairvillelibrary.org.
Information about upcoming library events and a contact form to register are available on the website at www.sinclairvillelibrary.org.
