South county man sentenced on burglary charges

A Kiantone man who this spring pleaded guilty to burglary charges will now spend several years in state prison.

David Spunaugle will serve five years plus five years of parole supervision. The 46-year-old was sentenced July 27 by Chautauqua County Court Judge David Foley after pleading guilty in May to charges of second-degree attempted burglary and third-degree burglary.

For the latter charge, Spunaugle will serve two to four years. The sentences will run concurrently, Chautauqua County District Attorney Jason Schmidt announced.

Spunaugle was indicted last year on charges of second- and third-degree burglary for separate incidents in the Jamestown area.

According to Jamestown police, a woman returned to her East Fifth Street home the afternoon of Oct. 1, 2021, and reportedly found Spunaugle inside. The man quickly left through a window but was taken into custody by police with the help of a good Samaritan.

Police said Spunaugle was attempting to take a chainsaw, silverware and camera equipment.

He also was charged in late December 2020 after a pair of break-ins over two days in Kiantone. In one instance, sheriff’s deputies responded to Kiantone Road and learned that the town resident had allegedly been removing items from a residence. A day later, a vehicle was observed parked on a lawn in the town of Kiantone, with Spunaugle exiting a residence. An investigation found that Spunaugle had allegedly removed several items.
