Water bill changes approved by Silver Creek

SILVER CREEK — Following a public hearing prior to its meeting, the Village Board approved two minor changes to newly adopted local laws. For the most part, the changes serve as bookkeeping clarifications, though there are some tangible changes that come with them, even if minor.

“Basically, the old code used to read is that you paid water every six months and sewer every six months,” said Silver Creek Mayor Jeff Hornburg. “What we did back in the day is we changed it to paying quarterly for both of them.”

Late charges in the water bills also changed with the acceptance of these amendments to the local laws. Should residents not pay their bill within 30 days, there is an additional charge of 10%. The change came in that now the bills will be sent out on the first of February, May, August, and November and the bills are due at the end of the month. But should the first of those months fall on a weekend, the bills wouldn’t be received until the first Monday, giving residents the extra bit of time to pay it.

“If February started off with Monday the third, you’d have until March third to get it paid,” Hornburg said.

The other change came in the sewer penalty payment. The sewer payment is now also payable quarterly during the same months as the water payment, and the same 10 percent late charge applies there as well.

The village also announced the hours for the Kiwanis’ ‘Trunk or Treat’ event on Halloween Day, from 5:30 to 8 p.m in the Silver Creek Village Square. There will also be a parade from the Silver Creek Fire Hall to the Backline that begins at 5 p.m. on Halloween. The historic dining car will be open for Trick or Treaters on the day of Halloween, and the Village is expecting that to be bustling all night.

The next meeting will be Monday, Nov. 1 at 7 p.m. The Silver Creek Planning Board will be meeting on Monday, Oct. 26 at 7 p.m. in the Fire Hall, in a meeting that is open to the public. The planning board will be attended by a representative from Region 9 Construction as well as a member of the UAW to discuss the construction of the Main Street School.
