A Jamestown resident is headed behind bars for having a stolen handgun.

According to District Attorney Jason Schmidt, Cody Boisvert, 25, was sentenced in Chautauqua County Court by Judge David Foley to 3.5 years in state prison with 5 years of post-release supervision after being convicted of second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, a class C violent felony.

In July 2023, officers from the Jamestown Police Department observed Boisvert to be illegally in possession of a loaded 9 mm handgun without a permit after being called to the area of Warner Place and Barrett Avenue for a well-being check. Police said the firearm had been reported stolen during a city burglary the month before.

In August state police were contacted for stolen firearms and it was determined that Boisvert was in possession of them.

Boisvert was also sentenced to an indeterminate state prison sentence of 1 to 3 years after being convicted of fourth-degree criminal possession of stolen property, a class E felony.

The two sentences will run concurrently.

Boisvert pled guilty to both charges in December 2023.
