Cassadaga needs decision on plow

CASSADAGA — With the winter season now upon us, the village is struggling with their plow truck.

Superintendent of Public Works Sam Alaimo said that the truck is not able to run and is unable to put both sand and salt on the roads.

Additionally, Alaimo said that there is a problem with the engine. Trying to install a used engine didn’t work, and the truck is still out of operation. Alaimo said he has borrowed a truck from another municipality but they can’t keep it for long. Because of that, he has been looking at new cores, which average around $15,000. Purchasing a used truck, according to Alaimo, would be around $30,000.

To attempt to solve their problem, the Village Board will be holding a special meeting today to discuss what action they can take to resolve this issue, as the village can’t be without a plow truck. The meeting will begin at noon.

Alaimo also said that there will be no more brush and leaves picked up until the spring, as all the equipment has been winterized and put away for the season. Alaimo asks that any piles of sticks be moved back onto property, four feet off the road.

In other business, the board, in anticipation of a new business entering village limits, have approved themselves as the lead agent as part one of the New York State Environmental Quality Review Act. The vote to become the lead agent passed unanimously through the board.

The business, a proposed sporting goods store by local businessman Adam Diate, has been deemed to fit within the Village of Cassadaga’s comprehensive plan. From here, the resolution will be sent to the Chautauqua Planning Board and Division of Transportation for further comments and assessment. Cassadaga Mayor Bill Dorman is pleased by the prospect of this proposed sporting goods store.

“We’re encouraged to see a new business in town,” said Dorman.
