June primary ballot released, August ballot not finalized

The candidates running in a primary for governor are known, but not those who are going to be running in a primary for the newly drawn 23rd congressional district.

The Chautauqua County Board of Elections has released the sample ballots for the June 28 primary. For the Democratic side, registered party voters will vote for their choice for governor and lieutenant governor. For governor, the candidates are Thomas R. Suozzi, Kathy Hochul and Jumaane D. Williams. For lieutenant governor, the candidates are Ana Maria Archila, Diana Reyna and Antonio Delgado.

For registered Republican voters, there are no candidates on the ballot for lieutenant governor, only governor. The individuals running for governor on the GOP side are Rob Astorino, Andrew Giullani, Harry Wilson and Lee Zeldin.

County Republican Election Commissioner Brian Abram said there are no local primaries for villages or towns.

For Dunkirk voters, a special election will be held June 21 for all residents to select one library trustee for the Dunkirk Public Library. There are no names on the ballot, so voters will need to write in a candidate.

After the June primary, a special election and additional primaries will take place Aug. 23.

For the special election, Joe Sempolinski is the endorsed Republican and Conservative candidate and Max Della Pia is the endorsed Democratic and Working Families candidate. One of the two will be sworn in to take over the seat vacated by Tom Reed, who resigned from Congress in early May to take a job with a lobbying firm.

The special election is open to all registered voters.

At the same time, primaries will be held that day for candidates for the newly drawn 23rd Congressional District.

The ballots have not been set yet, although petitions were due June 10.

County Democratic Election Commissioner Luz Torres said at this point it appears Della Pia is the only Democratic candidate running for the newly drawn 23rd Congressional District.

For the Republican side Abram did not want to say any possible names or even number of candidates that could appear on the August primary ballot. “We should be able to (announce) in the next 24 to 48 hours,” he said. “You’ve got the declination period that is still pending. Very shortly the declination period will end and then the state will give us the certified ballot of what it will look like for us.”

There could be court challenges, which could further delay the Republican ballot as well.

Republican names that could be on the ballot include state Republican Chairman Nick Langworthy, Buffalo developer and former gubernatorial candidate Carl Paladino, Michael Zigler of Tompkins County, Richard Moon of Jamestown and Fredonia native Marc Cenedella. Sempolinski said in a news release that he was not seeking to become a candidate for the newly drawn 23rd Congressional district.

Aug. 23 is also the date for the state Senate primary.

REGISTERED VOTERS

In order to participate in the June primary, individuals would already need to be registered in that party. However, it appears individuals who want to register or switch parties for the August primary may be able to do so next month. “We are not allowing any party changes until July 5. After July 5, the session reopens and what I was told by the state Board (of Elections), was until July 29, you would be allowed to change your party affiliation,” he said.

July 29, it appears, will also be the last day for people to register for the November elections. Abram said his office is waiting to get that information in writing.
