Dunkirk’s music series is canceled tonight. Music in Memorial Park is not happening due to thunderstorms and heavy rain, the city’s Festivals and Special Events division posted on social media. It was supposed to be “Canadian Night.” There was no word on rescheduling of the event. There are two rain dates at the end of the city’s music series calendar. A strong line of storms came up Chautauqua County’s Lake Erie coastline after 1 p.m. There was minor street flooding observed in Fredonia and reported in Dunkirk.

The Dunkirk City School District is set to lose more than six centuries of experience from its staff. There are 23 employees retiring at the end of this school year. Superintendent Brian Swatland told the Dunkirk Board of Education at its June meeting that between them, they have 660 years of experience with the district. “We have a lot of people here tonight who have devoted their lives to Dunkirk and our students,” he said. A report was filed with the Dunkirk Police Department regarding an alleged inappropriate sexual relationship between a juvenile subject and an adult male. Through an investigation conducted by the Dunkirk Police Department and a forensic interview through the Child Advocacy Program it was determined Vernal F. Carpenter, 44, and the juvenile subject allegedly engaged in sexual contact on several occasions.
