Former Jamestown police officer charged with transmitting threatening communication
A former Jamestown police officer is facing charges for allegedly posting a threat against law enforcement in February.
U.S. Attorney William J. Hochul Jr. announced Wednesday that Michael Bush, 35, of Jamestown, was arrested and charged by criminal complaint with transmitting communication containing a threat to injure another person. The charge carries a maximum of five years in prison, a $250,000 fine or both.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Caleb J. Petzoldt, who is handling the case, stated that according to the complaint, on Feb. 26, Bush posted a threat on the “Jamestown, New York Topix” forum page. The post contained a threat against two individuals within the Jamestown Police Department, according to an affidavit filed by the FBI in support of the complaint.
The defendant appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge H. Kenneth Schroeder on Wednesday morning. A detention hearing is scheduled for today.
The complaint is the culmination of an investigation by the Jamestown Police Department, under the direction of Chief Harry Snellings, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, under the direction of Special Agent in Charge Adam S. Cohen.
Bush had a previous entanglement with the law on Jan. 18, 2013, as officers responded to a reported domestic violence dispute at his Ellicott residence. Bush barricaded himself in his home with a weapon for hours, and at one point confronted officers holding a rifle. Police were successful in getting Bush to surrender. He was charged with second-degree obstructing governmental administration a week later.
Bush also allegedly posted a threat against Jamestown police in the “Lakewood, New York Topix” forum page in January 2015, according to the affidavit. In September 2015, Bush allegedly called the Ellicott Police Department and made threats against Jamestown and Ellicott police.
