Dunkirk hires principal, football coach

In less than three minutes this week, the Dunkirk Board of Education agreed to hire a high school principal and a varsity football head coach, also filling a few other positions.

Mark Benton was named the varsity football head coach for the 2021-22 school year. Dunkirk resident Joshua Tedone, the so-called “house principal, high school,” will make $95,000 a year beginning Sept. 1.

The other hires were as follows:

¯ Adam Hernandez, a New York City resident, as an assistant principal for the middle and high school at an annual salary of $82,500;

¯ Ann Birmingham, resident of Webster, as an art teacher for Schools 3, 5 and 7 at $48,244 for an annual salary;

¯ Chelsea Gray, who lives in Dunkirk, for a social worker position at School 3 with a salary of $46,290;

¯ Jeffrey Johnson, of Delevan, to be a health teacher at the middle/high school for $49,675 in pay;

¯ Laura Munson, of Depew, as a School 3 physical education and health teacher for $49,290;

¯ Tracey Onuffer, a Cheektowaga resident, for a middle/high school social worker position, with a $50,608 salary;

¯ Phillip Schneider, of Cheektowaga, as “physical education teacher, intermediate school,” for $47,290 in annual pay; and

¯ Kelsey Wise, from Hamburg, as a school counselor with a salary of $48,880.

The board held a special meeting to ratify a resolution that approved all of the new hires at once. That was basically the extent of the public portion of the meeting. It then went into an executive session without specifying a reason why, which is a violation of section 105 of the New York State Open Meetings Law.

Starting at $3.50/week.
