New historical marker coming to Fredonia to honor Lafayette

This marker is located in Buffalo.

The Lafayette Trail Inc. is a non-profit organization whose mission is to document, map, and mark Gen. Marquis de Lafayette’s footsteps during his Farewell Tour of the United States in 1824 and 1825. It aims to educate the public about the national significance of Lafayette’s Tour and to promote a broader understanding of Lafayette’s numerous contributions to American independence and national coherence in preparation for the 2024-25 tour bicentennial celebrations.

As an agent of the Pomeroy Foundation, the Lafayette Trail has coordinated the placement of 86 historical markers around the United States to commemorate locations where General Lafayette visited on his grand tour of the United States in 1824-1825. Last year, Pomfret Town Historian Todd Langworthy applied for a marker on behalf of his town to be placed in Fredonia to symbolize Gen. Lafayette’s visit to Fredonia on June 4, 1825.

With undeniable evidence that Lafayette visited his town, Langworthy was thrilled when he was notified that his marker request had been approved for immediate production. Since then, the marker has arrived in town and has been awaiting installation in preparation for a dedication ceremony.

That ceremony will take place on Sunday at 10 a.m., exactly 198 years after Lafayette’s visit to Fredonia.

The location of the marker will be on the grounds of the Darwin R. Barker Historical Museum at 7 Day St. in Fredonia.

Langworthy will be serving as the master of ceremonies for the event, which will feature a short overview of the Lafayette Trail organization, Lafayette’s visit to Fredonia and a few words by local officials.

Fredonia’s marker will become the 87th marker installed in the United States, as well as the 12th marker in New York State. The closest marker to Fredonia is the marker in Lafayette Square in downtown Buffalo, which was presented on Dec. 13, 2021. The event is open to the public and all of those interested in local history are encouraged to attend.

The town of Pomfret will be sharing information on how local residents may make a donation to the Lafayette Trail organization in honor of the Fredonia marker at the ceremony and afterward.

Residents are encouraged to make a donation on behalf of the marker in Fredonia. Lafayette Trail is a non-profit and works strictly on donations to make the program possible at https://secure.givelively.org/donate/lafayette-trail/fredonia
