BROCTON – The Brocton Central School District welcomed social justice advocate and nonprofit founder Mark Talley for a powerful schoolwide assembly, encouraging students in grades six to 12 to inspire inclusion and social justice for all.
Talley is the founder of Agents for Advocacy, a nonprofit based in Buffalo that focuses on improving racial equity, breaking the cycle of systemic racism and community empowerment through education, outreach, and action.
The assembly, titled “Listening, Reflecting, Taking Action,” focused on the long-term effects of systemic racism, the poverty rates of Brocton being higher than the national average. The purpose of this assembly was to inspire young people to use their voice and advocate for an inclusive and compassionate society. Students were receptive and engaged during the assembly.

Talley was open and honest with his storytelling and encouraged students to listen with empathy, stand up for what is right and take steps toward building inclusive environments for all. This wasn’t just an assembly; it was a call to action, to be the change.

Students are able to reflect on the assembly and what they can do to create a more inclusive school environment. One student said, “When something bad happens, you can still make good out of it without revenge.”
Mark Talley’s discussion with the Brocton students was invaluable to the districts’ ongoing efforts to engage students in meaningful conversations, create a culture of care and inclusion, and empower students to be the voice for change.
