Use caution planning with Van Buren

Editor, OBSERVER: I was disheartened to read about potential changes in zoning near Van Buren (March 7). I realize that no firm decisions have been made but wanted to share my thoughts with the Pomfret Town Board and its supervisor while they consider options. Many at Van Buren Point (and Bay, and no doubt other communities along the lake front) are longtime residents, and have deep affection for the area at large, not just our own backyards. Editor, OBSERVER: Maybe it’s time to take a look at the U.N. to determine if it serves any purpose. Adjust its charter to make it simply a provider of humanitarian aid across the globe. Next, kick out the evil empires like Russia, China, North Korea, and Iran who do nothing but veto and obstruct the rest of the nations trying to provide relief to those countries desperate for assistance. World, nation are in disarray

Editor, OBSERVER: Is there a ship of fools guiding this nation? I ask this quite seriously. Why are we even considering going back to an Iran Nuclear deal? Why would we enrich a hostile nation that has said such a deal would not end its pursuit of nuclear weapons, and has not changed its stated desire to destroy the U.S. and Israel? And who is so clueless, or so gifted with a perverse sense of humor, that said Iran deal is to be negotiated with Russia? Why are we considering buying oil from another criminal dictator in Venezuela? I ask these questions every night when I pray ...

Put people first with remapping

Editor, OBSERVER: The League of Women Voters of New York state and Chautauqua County believes that voters should choose their representatives, not that representatives should choose their voters. The state League has made statements against the recent Congressional, Senate, and Assembly Maps released by the legislature. We believe that Chautauqua County deserves a transparent and fair redistricting process by the bipartisan commission. Gerrymandering is silencing communities. MARY CROXTON, Fredonia

People’s column: Not forgetting some historic lessons

Editor, OBSERVER: The article by Cal Thomas in the OBSERVER (March 1) was right on the mark! It should be discussed in ever social studies and history class in high schools and colleges. If we do not learn from past experiences we are likely to repeat them, and anyone who lived through the period prior to and during World War II will be able to relate. People’s column: Donations, group add to local fabric

Editor, OBSERVER: A big thank you to the people who donated yarn to the Thursday Knitting Group that meets at St. Joseph’s Church in Fredonia. This past year more than 700 items were hand knit and crocheted, including hats, scarves, mittens, baby items and afghans, etc. These items were donated locally to the Salvation Army, Hospice, the Lion’s Club, St. Gianna Pregnancy Outreach Center, Chautauqua Nursing and Rehab Services, UPMC Jamestown Hospital and other groups.
