Thirty years ago — 1990

Seventeen-year-old Michelle Eagan, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Eagan of King Road, Forestville is the Student of the Week. A senior at Forestville High School, she is the recipient of a Regents scholarship, Bausch and Lomb Science Award and she attended the National Youth Leadership Conference held in Washington, D.C. Michelle plans to attend Cornell University next fall to major in biochemistry.

Forty years ago — 1980

A “Do You Remember?” photo shows the J.S. Knox Cigar Emporium as it looked around the turn of the century. The store, which was originally located on Main Street in Silver Creek eventually became the Central Smoke Shop, which is on Central Avenue in the village. The smoke shop’s current owner, Bill Carbin, found the business’s history was hidden in the store’s basement in the form of “junk” that has accumulated over the business’s 85-year history.

Fifty years ago — 1970

More than 400 students staged a sit-in demonstration at Fredonia State University College to confront President Oscar E. Lanford.
