SHERIDAN Long waiting game with an eyesore

There’s no denying what is obvious to everyone who drives through Route 20 in the town of Sheridan. Remnants of the June 2022 blaze that wiped out businesses, most notably Pawn Starz, at Roberts Road is a sad site for all who pass by.

Town Board members, for their part, have not allowed the issue to just get kicked down the road. Currently, the government is seeking legal action to have something done about the eyesore.

“It’s frustrating,” said town Code Enforcement Officer James Crowell. “It’s very unsightly. It’s dangerous, it’s a health hazard. You’d think that somebody bigger than us would be interested in it, but it doesn’t seem to be that way, unfortunately.”

That Pawn Starz location is a monument to just what the local government cannot do. Town Board members are stuck and have very little recourse.

Sheridan, which does not disclose its spending plan for 2024 on its website, is in a waiting game while the process over the property goes through the courts. It’s not fair to taxpayers — and all residents.
