Thirty years ago — 1990

The State University of New York (SUNY) campuses have a difficult choice: charge students and employees for parking or risk layoffs. The controversial parking fee system was proposed last year after Gov. Mario Cuomo vetoed a $200 tuition increase for SUNY students. The proposed fees would average $132 a year.

Forty years ago — 1980

The bell tower at the former Sacred Heart Church in Dunkirk could be preserved as a city landmark. This is the opinion of Jack Fiske, who is president of a company that handles repairs and maintenance of church buildings. The cost of retaining the tower without the church is between $50,000 and $60,000.

Fifty years ago — 1970

Construction has begun on the Colonel Sanders Kentucky Fried Chicken Restaurant, Lake Shore Drive West, Dunkirk.
