Thirty years ago — 1991

Custom Designs Home Center recently hosted a grand opening with various local and area Chamber of Commerce dignitaries in attendance. Forty years ago — 1981

The name of Daniel Newman of Dunkirk began cropping up in Mayville as a possible compromise candidate for the vacant county coroner position. The Chautauqua County Legislature still is trying to fill the post six weeks after the resignation of Kenneth Merle of Brocton. Mr. Newman reportedly would not be willing to take the position so long as his longtime personal friend, Coroner Anson Steward of Dunkirk, is still in the running.

Fifty years ago — 1971

The Supreme Court overturned today the government’s conviction of former heavyweight champion Muhammad Ali on charges of defying the draft. The court’s decision upheld Ali’s claim that he could have been granted military-exempt because of his adherence to the Black Muslim faith.
