Thirty years ago — 1991

Dunkirk Volunteer Firemen’s Association President Gary Haase this morning revealed that the association last month confirmed a proposal to have Third Assistant Fire Chief Michael Edwards Jr. take over as the city’s full-time fire chief on Jan. 1, for a two-year term.

Forty years ago — 1981

Frederick J. Zazycki, acting director of J.N. Adam Developmental Center in Perrysburg, and Sister Grace Roll, director of St. Joseph’s School for Exceptional Children in Fredonia, signed a memorandum of agreement opening the first work site for Foster Grandparents in Chautauqua County at St. Joseph’s School. At the program in Perrysburg instituted in 1972, senior citizens spend four hours a day, five days a week bringing love, care and companionship to the developmentally disabled children.

Fifty years ago — 1971

The redecorated sanctuary of the First United Methodist Church of Fredonia was dedicated during the Nov. 3 ceremonies. The church is observing the 160th anniversary of the founding of Methodism in Fredonia.
