Thirty years ago — 1991

James Edson, a senior at Cassadaga Valley Central School and the son of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Edson of Sinclairville, has been selected to attend the National Young Leaders Conference from Dec. 10-15 in Washington, D.C. An honor student listed in Who’s Who Among High School Students for three consecutive years, James will be among 350 outstanding high school students across the nation designated “Congressional Scholars.”

Forty years ago — 1981

The Gowanda American Legion Post 409 officially dedicated the veterans memorial that was installed in the mini-park next to the Persia Town Hall. Area Legionnaires marched from the Gowanda American Legion Hall to the memorial, which honors all war veterans from the American Revolution to the Vietnam Conflict. Past National Commander Michael J. Kogutek gave the main address and recognized the efforts of Gowanda Legionnaire Benjamin Kysor in establishing the fund for the new memorial.

Fifty years ago — 1971

The Federal Department of Defense has appropriated funds for the construction of a new administration building at the New York State National Guard Armory in Dunkirk.
