Thirty years ago — 1991

James Rawcliffe of Fredonia was in Indianapolis recently to attend the North American Grand National Bridge Competition. He returned with four first place trophies and 34 master points. Thousands attended the event, each seeking rewards that come with such intense competition. Mr. Rawcliffe placed first in three partnership games and the Swiss team event. He scored more points than most players from small local clubs achieve over a period of years.

Forty years ago — 1981

From Just Between Us … Now wasn’t that a “fancy” cake his gourmet cooking class prepared to honor Michael Hudson of Dunkirk on his birthday? While trying (unsuccessfully) to cut the decorated gift, the teacher soon discovered it was a “box” cake in every sense of the word.

Fifty years ago — 1971

Two Fredonia seed merchants were elected officers of the New York State Seed Association at its annual meeting in Ithaca. John F. Schiffman, president of the Hygrade Seed Co. was elected president and George B. Weaver Jr., president of Fredonia Seed Co., was re-elected secretary-treasurer for the 15th consecutive year.
