The newly installed weigh scales at the Chautauqua County Landfill in Ellery Center are now in operation. The scales will allow the landfill to base its fees on weight instead of estimates of volume of garbage deposited, according to County Executive Andrew Goodell. The scales were installed under an order from the state. New fee schedules based on tons instead of cubic yards will be ready for implementation soon.

A job well done by Dunkirk American Legion Post 62 and area residents resulted in a $2,045.43 check toward the construction of the Vietnam Memorial in Washington, D.C. Post Commander Richard Harper accepted the check from Michael Gregoreski, a Vietnam veteran and honorary chairman of the drive. Claude C. Sharpe served as general chairman. The proposed black granite monument will honor thousands of Vietnam Vets including 34 Chautauqua County men who died during the conflict.
