Thirty years ago — 1993

While high levels of lead are being found in residential tap water in many cities across the eastern United States, Dunkirk isn’t one of them. Cities in New York state such as Buffalo and Utica have shown high levels of lead in their drinking water, according to a report by the Environmental Protection Agency. The city of Dunkirk didn’t make the list, however, because the levels of lead in the tap water at most homes are well below the maximum.

Forty years ago — 1983

Dunkirk Mayor Edwin Gregoreski has proclaimed “Louis Van Wey Appreciation Day” in the city of Dunkirk. Mr. Van Wey served as president of the Historical Society of Dunkirk until 1980, when he was named president emeritus. Members of the society and the community have planned a dinner to commemorate the group’s 10th anniversary and to honor Mr. Van Wey for his work in helping to found the society.

Fifty years ago — 1973

Gold soared to new heights in early trading in Europe today, breaking the $100-anounce mark for the first time in history and according to London-based reporters, American tourists joined the stampede for the metal.
