Thirty years ago — 1994

More than 100 friends, community members, colleagues and relatives attended a dinner- dance honoring Judge Raul Figueroa, a former Dunkirk resident. The event was held at the Kosciuszko Club in Dunkirk and was hosted by Hispanics Organized for Progress and Education (HOPE). Currently, Judge Figueroa is the only city court judge in the state to serve on the State Advisory Committee on Judicial Ethics. The “Raul Figueroa Award for Distinguished Public Service,” was named in his honor by a task force of the New York State Assembly.

Forty years ago — 1984

The third Monday in January will be an official state holiday in honor of the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.On July 5, Gov.Mario Cuomo signe 1d a law designating the day to honor the civil rights leader, who was assassinated in 1968. The state has honored King on his birthdate for several years, and the official holiday allows state workers to take the day off in place of another holiday.

Fifty years ago — 1974

Dave Salerno of Fredonia constructed homemade spotlights and a control center for the stage lighting at the Dunkirk-Fredonia Community Players stage at the Depot Theatre.
