EDUCATION: Cuomo’s other harsh message

Teachers, as evidenced in Fredonia on Tuesday night, are not happy with state Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

In his State of the State address last week, the governor was tough on education, calling for a number of reforms. He made it known that a system currently in place, which rates teachers from highly effective to ineffective, is not working.

“Everyone will tell you nationwide, the key to education reform is a teacher evaluation system,” he said.

Reforms are needed, but just how severe? New York state still offers a high-quality education when compared to other areas of the nation. And yes, inner-city schools struggle in meeting those benchmarks that suburban schools consistently meet.

But educators have one more thing going against them. This is Cuomo’s fifth State of the State address. It means he has been re-elected.

In the two times Cuomo has run for top office, the New York State United Teachers has arrogantly not backed him even though he was the better candidate both times when it came to educational issues.

Cuomo has not forgotten the lack of endorsement. If things do get rougher, teachers can blame their partners in NYSUT.

If unions want to get political, there is a price to pay. It, unfortunately, will get passed on to the working members while the union leadership, which pays no penalty, speaks freely and collects the dues.
