Just how bad are the village of Fredonia’s finances? Judging by the Church Street entrance to Village Hall, it’s a lot worse than the caution tape.

For more than a year, the right staircase to the entrance has been closed to residents due to unsafe steps. The left side, however, closed earlier this month because of similar problems. Besides the stairs being unsafe, it is an embarrassing look for a community with so much pride.

“I’ve been hearing a lot of complaints,” Mayor Athanasia Landis said last week. “We’re at the point where we need to (address the problem).”

In any case, the steps — in the big picture — are a minor repair. There’s plenty of other worries that will remain once the stairs get fixed.

Including streets and infrastructure, it is a long list.
