DUNKIRK JCC move must help enrollment
On Monday, Jamestown Community College is holding three sets of roundtable discussions regarding a potential move of its north-county campus to downtown Dunkirk. Currently, the site is located off Route 60 in the town — making transportation necessary for city residents to attend.
Roundtables will be at 8 a.m., noon, and 5 p.m. at the North County Training Center at 10807 Bennett Road in Dunkirk. Those interested in attending should contact James Kelemen, JCC administrative specialist, at 716-363-6500 or JamesKelemen@mail.sunyjcc.edu.
“The goal of the Business Roundtable is to have a candid conversation with our local business owners to get a better understanding of what programs they need, how JCC can meet those needs, and how businesses will support programs initiated on their behalf in a downtown location,” said Daniel DeMarte, president of JCC. “As we prepare for a possible move downtown, it is imperative that we have community engagement and support.”
A potential relocation of the facility to the Graf Building at 319 Central Ave. is part of the $10 million Downtown Revitalization Initiative that was announced by state Gov. Kathy Hochul at the end of January. Bringing increased traffic — including pedestrians — to a desolate portion of the Central Avenue strip from the lake to Sixth Street is an important piece for the region.
At first glance, the idea appears to be a no-brainer. It could bring an additional synergy with the State University of New York at Fredonia, which is located 2 miles to the south. But there is a problem that faces both educational institutions that need an urgent solution. That is declining enrollment.
If this move to downtown can help boost numbers for JCC, then it is well worth the investment. But that topic of student population needs to be addressed in this initiative.
