HEALTH CARE In quiet manner, Westfield site excels

Let’s not forget about those who are flying under the radar doing an excellent job when it comes to health care. We, of course, are speaking about Allegheny Health Network-Westfield Memorial Hospital.

Since its affiliation with Saint Vincent in Erie — and later extending to AHN, Westfield Memorial is a gem when it comes to caring for a large rural population that extends from Portland to many communities in southern Chautauqua County.

Last week, in a news release, a pair of hospital unions — the New York State Nurses Association and 1199 Service Employees International Union, — announced a rally of support later this month for the Brooks-TLC Hospital System. “Brooks Memorial Hospital is the only health-care facility available in northern Chautauqua County,” the unions noted. “The dedicated healthcare workers at Brooks continue to provide care in an aging and outdated facility in Dunkirk. The community has been waiting for seven-plus years for the New York State Department of Health to release previously approved funds to construct a new modernized hospital.”

Though their efforts have the best of intentions, it’s not totally accurate. AHN-Westfield Memorial Hospital is one of three hospitals serving the county, including one of two in the north.

There’s no minimizing the need for a new Brooks-TLC. But don’t overlook the excellent care taking being offered by those who work at the Westfield facility.
