LECOM Qualifier held

Michigan golfer sets Shorewood course record

OBSERVER Photos by Ron Szot Jamestown resident Ryan Nord, above, golfs at the LECOM Health Challenge Open Qualifier Monday at Shorewood Country Club in Dunkirk. The event gave golfers an opportunity to qualify for the LECOM Health Challenge (part of the Web.com Tour, a feeder tour for the PGA Tour) at Peek’n Peak Resort July 5-8. The event was delayed in mid-afternoon because of the stormy weather in the area, below, but play eventually resumed. Nord did not tee off until 3:20 p.m. due to the delay, and wound up shooting a 1-over 73 (35 on the front nine, 38 on the back) to miss the cut for qualifying, which was 7-under or better.

Twelve players punched their tickets into the Web.com Tour’s LECOM Health Challenge at Peek’n Peak Resort this weekend by qualifying for the tournament Monday at Shorewood Country Club.

Willie Mack of Grand Blanc, Michigan, led the field with a 12-under 60 to set a course record.

Tied for second with 8-under 64s were Luke McClellan of Bluffton, South Carolina; Ryan Sullivan of Winston Salem, North Carolina; Brad Fritsch of Holly Springs, North Carolina; John Langhoff of Pewaukee, Wisconsin; and Derek Bard of Jacksonville Beach, Florida.

A group of six players tied for seventh with 7-under 65s. They were: Bryce Edmister of Wilmington, North Carolina; Sean Jacklin of Bradenton, Florida; Jordan Gumberg of Fort Lauderdale, Florida; Mario Beltran of Miami; Stephen Gangluff of Delaware, Ohio; and Jesse Larson of Mendon, Vermont.

Ryan Nord of Jamestown shot a 1-over 73 to tie for 97th while Josh Harrington of Portland tied for 109th with a 3-over 75.

But the story Monday was Mack, who birdied Nos. 1, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 9 on the front nine to make the turn at 6-under 30. He matched that score on the back nine with birdies at Nos. 10, 12, 14, 15, 17 and 18. He was consistent on all types of holes, shooting 4-under on the par 3s, par 4s and par 5s.

McClellan’s round consisted of six birdies as well as an eagle on the par-5 No. 10. Sullivan started on the back nine, picked up seven birdies in his round and eagled the par-5 No. 9 to end his day, but a bogey at the par-5 No. 18 as he made the turn ended up costing him second place all to himself.

Fritsch also eagled the par-5 No. 10 and picked up eight birdies on the day, but bogeys on the par-3 No. 4 and par-4 No. 14 were costly to him. Langhoff started on the back nine and made par on every hole before turning in a blistering 8-under 28 on the front nine with birdies on every hole to move into the tie for second.

Bard, the final player at 8-under, started on the back nine and went birdie, bogey, birdie, birdie, bogey to begin his day. A birdie at No. 18 put him at 2-under as he made the turn before he went eagle, birdie, birdie to open the front nine. After a string of four pars, Bard birdied Nos. 8 and 9 to finish at 8-under.

In the group at 7-under, Beltran and Gangluff each made an eagle, six birdies and a bogey; Edmister made eight birdies and a bogey; and Jacklin and Larson each made seven birdies.

Nine players shot 6-under to tie for 13th and fail to qualify for the Thursday through Sunday tournament by one shot. Included in that group was Ben Reichert of East Amherst.

Other players from the region who failed to qualify were Peter Creighton of Kenmore, who finished two shots back of the qualifiers in a tie for 22nd at 5-under 67. Austin Nowak of Lancaster finished in a tie for 43rd at 3-under 69. Billy Gaffney of Williamsville and Danny Yustin of East Amherst finished tied for 109th with Harrington at 3-over 75.

LECOM Health Challenge week will continue today with the invitation-only New Era Pro-Am on The Upper Course at Peek’n Peak today. Players will have practice rounds on The Upper Course on Independence Day before competition begins Thursday with players teeing off on holes Nos. 1 and 10.
