Fredonia celebrates Senior Night with a 77-55 victory over Kenmore West

The Fredonia Hillbillies took down the Kenmore West Blue Devils 77-55 on Saturday, in what was the team’s throwback game and Senior Night. The team sported the jerseys of the 1994 Fredonia Hillbillies, who made it to the Class D Far West Regional.

The game was close through the first quarter, where Fredonia led 24-20, but the defense clicked into gear in the second, outscoring the Blue Devils 17-6, to take control of the game. Fredonia coach Nick Bertrando thinks the team was inspired by a pre-game visit.

“Some of the old alumni came in and talked about the last time those uniforms we had were worn, and something special happened,” Bertrando said. “They talked about what it means to the school and community. There’s a lot to live up to putting uniforms on and they embraced it. They loved that we broke those out, and had a little pep in their step.”

Tyler Putney led the ‘Billies with 29 points, 12 boards, and four blocks, while Nick Whitfield had 17 points, 13 rebounds, and six assists. Kaleb Rybij added 12 points and Alec Schrader had six assists. Every senior scored a bucket for Fredonia.

“It was a great way to send out the seniors,” Bertrando said. “All the seniors got into scoring column. I was excited to send them off with a win after their years of dedication.”
