Ethan Fry had 19 of his game-high 21 points in the second half as Fredonia rallied for a 62-53 Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association Division 1 West victory over Allegany-Limestone on Tuesday at Fredonia High School.

“At this point in the year, playing in the league we play in, any win is important,” Fredonia head coach Nick Bertrando said. “Allegany-Limestone has been at the top of our league since rejoining it. I’m proud of the guys and how they competed tonight.”

Hillbillies seniors Alex Field, Nick Creeley, Nick Whitfield and Gabe Schrader were honored prior to their final regular-season home game.

For 16 minutes, it looked like it wouldn’t be a successful Senior Night.

After halftime, Fredonia (10-7, 3-5) outscored the Gators (10-7, 3-4) 19-9 in the third quarter before holding on for the nine-point win.

“They went up three at halftime, but we tightened up defensively and executed better offensively,” Bertrando said, adding of Fry, “He started to be a little bit more aggressive on the offensive end and stretched the floor a little bit.”

Whitfield finished with 18 points and Creeley added 8 while Keegan Whitfield, Schrader and Jay Hawk each had 5.

“Creeley had a pair of big 3s early,” Bertrando said. “Every little bit counts, especially against a well-coached, strong Allegany-Limestone team.”

Tyler Curran led Allegany-Limestone with 21 points and Anthony DeCapua had 11.

The Hillbillies travel to Southwestern for another Division 1 West game Friday.

“There are no nights off in the CCAA Division 1 West. They got us at home. Aaron does a nice job over there,” Bertrando said. “They play hard, they play physical. Any time you play over there it’s a tough atmosphere. They do a nice job defending the home court.”

TROJANS COME UP SHORT

WEST ELLICOTT — Southwestern came close to handing Olean its first Division 1 West loss Tuesday night.

In the end, the Trojans’ furious comeback came up just short.

With a chance to go up four in the final seconds, the Huskies (14-1, 10-0) missed a free throw, but Southwestern’s three-quarter court pass was intercepted allowing Olean to run out the clock on a 57-54 victory.

The Huskies entered the fourth quarter with a 46-27 lead before the Trojans (7-11, 4-4) began to chip away. Eventually, Olean led 55-54 with 15 seconds left and inbounded the ball. Southwestern tried to put the Huskies at the free-throw line, but was called for an intentional foul. Olean made one free throw to go up 56-54 and then made another free throw with less than five seconds remaining to go up 57-54.

The Huskies led 15-5 after a first quarter during which the Trojans turned the ball over eight times.

“There was a lid on the basket in the first half,” Southwestern head coach Aaron Emley said.

Southwestern cleaned its offense up after that, finishing with just 13 turnovers.

Matt Pannes led the way for the Trojans with 25 points and 10 rebounds while Jason Ni had 14 points.

“Jason our last three games has been our most consistent player,” Emley said. “He’s been stepping up as a senior.”
