Blue Devils dealt loss by Potsdam
POTSDAM — Fredonia State fell to Potsdam 6-2 in a SUNYAC hockey game Friday.
The Devils were led by Kieran Furlonger and Johan Zollner, who scored the Devils two goals. The Blue Devils drop to 7-8-1 on the season and 5-6 in the SUNYAC conference.
Fredonia State started the game slowly, leading to three straight goals by the Bears. Potsdam scored its second goal of the game on the power play, after a tripping penalty was called on John Aonso of Fredonia State. Down 3-0, Furlonger was able to get the Devils on the board with a goal that was assisted by Aonso and Ryan Bailey, at 14:49 into the first. This goal brought the Blue Devils within 3-1.
Fredonia State was outshot 18-9 after the first period.
The Blue Devils came out in the second period with a higher level of intensity, scoring their second goal 2:42 into the start of the period. Fredonia State defenseman Zollner scored his first goal of the year with an assist coming from Craig McCabe on the power play. Penalties continued to be a problem for the Devils, as Potsdam scored its second power play goal from a tripping penalty called on Kurri Woodford. This goal gave the Bears a 4-2 lead, 14:43 into the period, that they held onto for the rest of the period.
Fredonia State was outshot 13-10 in the second period.
The third period was controlled by Potsdam on both ends of the ice. Fredonia State was unable to find the score sheet, while the Bears netted two goals late in the third to finish the game at 6-2. The Devils were outshot 13-6 in the third period, bringing the total shots on goal to 43-24 in the Bears favor.
Fredonia State looks to bounce back tonight against Plattsburgh.
