Senior named to NYSSWA Class D First Team; Libby is Third-Team choice

Two local players garnered First Team recognition on New York State Sportswriters Association all-state boys basketball teams released Wednesday.

Westfield senior Darien Swanson was named to the First Team in Class D while Salamanca sophomore Lucus Brown was named to the First Team in Class C.

Swanson led the Wolverines to a 22-2 record this season, including a perfect 12-0 mark in Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association Division 2 West play. He averaged 19.1 points, 6.8 assists, 6.1 rebounds and 3.8 steals per game.

Brown led the Warriors to the New York State Public High School Athletic Association final four where they lost to Stillwater in the semifinals. Playing in 18 of Salamanca’s 25 games, he averaged 21.2 points, 5.5 rebounds, 3.9 steals and 2.8 assists per game.

Fredonia senior Nick Whitfield received the highest local recognition in Class B with a Ninth Team nod. Leading the Hillbillies to a 13-9 record, Whitfield averaged 23.1 points, 9.3 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 2.6 blocked shots per game.

Southwestern senior Aidan Kennedy was named Honorable Mention in Class B.

Randolph freshman Drew Hind was named to the Fourth Team in Class C after leading the Cardinals to a 20-2 record, including a perfect 12-0 mark in CCAA Central Division action. Hind averaged 16.5 points, 4.6 assists, 4.2 rebounds and 2.3 steals per game. His 79 3-pointers ranked third in Section VI. Hind’s senior teammate, Gabe McCoy, was named to the Fifth Team after averaging 14.3 points, 6.5 rebounds and 2.9 blocked shots per game.

Silver Creek sophomore Ray Cortes was named to the Sixth Team in Class C after leading the Black Knights to a 15-8 record. Cortes averaged 25.1 points, 12.1 rebounds, 3.4 steals and 2.2 assists per game.

Salamanca senior twins Hayden and Harley Hoag were both named to the Eighth Team in Class C. Hayden averaged 6.5 assists, 4.4 points, 3.8 rebounds and 2.9 steals per game while Harley averaged 12.9 points, 6.0 rebounds, 2.4 steals and 2.2 assists per game.

Salamanca junior Andy Herrick, Frewsburg senior Zach Winters, Maple Grove senior Tucker Fenton, Randolph juniors Jaiden Huntington and Carson Conley, and Cattaraugus-Little Valley senior John Visnesky were named Honorable Mention in Class C.

Pine Valley senior Wayne Libby was named to the Third Team in Class D after leading the Panthers to a 14-5 record, including 7-3 in CCAA East Division action. Libby averaged 20.6 points, 5.7 rebounds, 3.2 steals and 2.1 steals per game. Libby’s senior teammate, Kordell Oakes, was named to the Seventh Team after averaging 15.9 points, 8.8 rebounds, 4.6 steals and 4.4 assists per game.

Sherman senior Gerald Carris was named to the Fourth Team after leading the Wildcats to a 12-8 record. Carris averaged 18.4 points, 6.8 rebounds and 1.7 steals per game.

Westfield freshman Carson Swanson was named to the Fifth Team after averaging 15.2 points and 3.0 steals per game. Swanson’s 68 3-pointers ranked seventh in Section VI.

Clymer senior Micah Willink was named to the Sixth Team after leading the Pirates to a 17-3 record, including 10-2 mark in CCAA Division 2 West play. Willink averaged 12.9 points, 8.3 rebounds, 3.7 steals and 2.7 assists per game.

Ellicottville senior Logan Grinols, Clymer junior Blake Kopta, Pine Valley senior Bryce Sercu, North Collins junior Matt Sweet and Panama freshmen Carter Brink and Bryce Hinsdale were named Honorable Mention in Class D.

Other Western New York recognition in Class B included: Timon senior Kevin Thompson, First Team; St. Mary’s senior Massimo Moretti, Second Team; Nichols junior Jalen Duff, Fourth Team; Nichols sophomore Jakye Rainey, Fourth Team; Riverside senior Bryant Rosa, Fifth Team; Tapestry senior LaMar Matthews, Seventh Team; Allegany-Limestone senior Tyler Curran, Eighth Team; Timon sophomore Jaiden Harrison, Ninth Team; Tonawanda senior Trevin Boling, 10th Team; Tapestry senior Romeo Bell 15th Team; and City Honors senior Caleb Chapman, 17th Team. Cardinal O’Hara senior Chris Wright, Lackawanna junior Juilenn Clements, Lewiston-Porter junior Bobby Beilein, Royalton-Hartland senior Aiden Petrie, Riverside senior Dane Maku and East senior Anthony Borden were named Honorable Mention.

In Class C, Holland senior Jake Golley was named to the Third Team and MST Seneca senior Nassir Williams was named to the Ninth Team while Portville senior Maxx Yehl, Holland junior Henry Anderson and Global Concepts sophomore Kobe Torres were named Honorable Mention.

Franklinville senior Blake Frank was named to the Third Team in Class D.
