Hillbillies open with win

HAMBURG — The Fredonia boys soccer team opened up its season with a 4-1 victory over Cheektowaga in the opening round of the Frontier Kick-Off Tournament.

The game was tied 1-1 at halftime before the Hillbillies (1-0-0) scored three goals in the second half to pull away for the victory.

Sam Murphy had two goals while Sal Tabone had one goal and one assist to lead Fredonia. Lucas Hoffman had what proved to be the game-winning goal early in the second half. Jayden Yerico also had an assist.

Andrew Cowan had five saves in net for Fredonia, which will play in the championship game today at 2 p.m. against Frontier, a 7-0 winner over CSAT.

NELSON NETS PK WINNER

RANDOLPH — Sophomore Griffin Nelson had his second hat trick of the week as Randolph beat Westfield/Brocton 4-3 in nonleague action.

Nelson won the game on a penalty kick in the 10th minute of overtime.

Nelson set a Cardinals program record with a goal seven seconds into the game, then added his second goal in the third minute. Freshman Cooper Freeman assisted on both goals.

Ryder Smith scored in the ninth minute from Nelson to give Randolph a 3-0 lead.

Carson Swanson scored in the 21st, 31st and 34th minutes for the Wolverines. Aiden Covert, Danny Bratton and Mason Baum had assists for Westfield/Brocton.

Kyle Senn made three saves for the Cardinals and Aaron Fuller made eight saves for the Wolverines.

GOLDEN COUGARS TOP TROJANS

FALCONER — Alex Reynolds netted two goals as Cassadaga Valley/Falconer held off Southwestern 3-1.

Reynolds scored the first two goals of the game, one in the 33rd minute from Coleson Barber and then again in the 44th minute from Christian Wilshire.

Seth Vaughn got the Trojans back into the game with a goal in the 60th minute, cutting the Golden Cougars lead to 2-1.

Roger Markham squashed any hope of a Trojans comeback with a goal in the 72nd minute that was assisted by Reynolds.
