Barker win over Forestville played under protest

BARKER — The final score of one of the Section VI Class D quarterfinal softball games Monday night read: No. 2 Barker 4, No. 7 Forestville 2.

But Hornets coach Brianne Hazelton is not settling for that outcome.

She’s protesting it.

“I’ve never experienced anything like it, even in my playing days and in my 13 years coaching,” Hazelton said. ” … The umpire kept calling illegal pitches (on Forestville pitcher Megan Gruber). As a coach, I believe she was not pitching illegally.”

Gruber’s deliveries were questioned by the plate umpire from the very first pitch in the bottom of the first inning. By the end of that frame, she had walked two batters because of “illegal” pitches and both of them scored.

The Raiders added one more run in both the second and third innings to build a 4-0 lead. Forestville’s Madison Sliwinski drilled a two-run double in the sixth to pull the Hornets to within 4-2, but that’s how the game ended … for now.

Hazelton, a former Division I pitcher at St. Bonaventure University, said she took photos of Gruber’s delivery and called Jay Hall, Section VI softball chairman, during the game to notify him of her intention to protest.

“I’ve never protested a game (before),” Hazelton said. “I’ve never argued with an umpire. It’s not what I do, but I felt so helpless. I felt so terrible.”

Gruber finished with seven strikeouts and scattered six hits, three of which came in the first inning. On offense, Aspen VanArsdale collected a pair of hits.

But Hazelton hopes that her team will get another chance to take the field this spring.
